Learn About Fraudulent Emails

Learn About Fraudulent Emails
Random customers of financial institutions have recently been the recipients of fraudulent emails. While these emails appear to be sent from the customer's bank, they were actually sent by imposters. The unsolicited emails were in different formats but typically included attachments, requested personal information, or both.
How this affects you
The Internet is a very powerful tool. You should be very careful when and how you share sensitive information online. Please be aware of the following when interacting with us over the Internet:
  • Sovereign Bank will never send an unsecured email requesting your User ID, Password, debit card number or any other sensitive information.
  • If we request information, you will always be directed back to www.sovereignbank.com or to 877-SOV-BANK (or another official Sovereign Bank telephone number). In order to ensure your confidence, Sovereign Bank will not use any other Internet addresses for this purpose.
  • If you are required to enter personal identification to perform a transaction (on a Sovereign Bank site), it will always be done on a secured Web page. Visitors to Sovereign's Online Banking site, as well as our other online applications, will see that the “http://” changes to “https://” (the letter “s” indicates a secure site). Also a small gold padlock will appear in your browser, indicating that the address is secure.

Any questions that you may have about an email that appears to be sent by Sovereign Bank, or that you believe was sent by an imposter, should be directed to the Sovereign Bank Online Banking team at 877-SOV-BANK, option 4.
  • Finally, the FBI has offered their own valuable tips for Internet users that can be found at http://www.fbi.gov/page2/jan05/cyber012405.htm. At this site you will find information on the FBI's awareness initiatives and tips on protecting yourself.
